Parliament wants commission to draft equal pay legislation

MEPs have overwhelmingly called on the European Commission to ensure that women are paid as much as men at work. They complain that the existing legislation - now in place for some 30 years - is well out of date, and want the EU to ensure employers stop discriminating - possibly under the threat of fines.

Athens and Skopje in UN court over name dispute

Athens on Tuesday strongly criticised Skopje's decision to file a complaint against Greece in the International Court of Justice, and said Macedonia would "remain outside the international organisations it wants to join" during the judicial process. Skopje is accusing Athens of violating the terms of a 1995 UN agreement between them.

Dublin in talks with EU capitals to retain commissioner

The Irish foreign minister, Micheal Martin has said that Dublin is in talks with other European capitals to see if the retention of a commissioner for each member state is viable - a key concern of No voters in the June referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

There are persistent differences across Europe in how long people live without major health problems, with both the GDP and expenditure on elderly care of their home countries among the key factors influencing these trends. A research team at University at Leicester has found that western Europeans live healthily on average 14 years more than their counterparts in the east of the continent.
